Popular Oregon Convention Center Events & Trade Shows
Each year, the Oregon Convention Center hosts trade shows attracting attendees and exhibitors from across North America and internationally. Some of the more popular events have a distinctly local vibe. These are recurring shows at the OCC which many Portlanders mark on their calendar as must attend events each year.
Oregon International Auto & Motorcycle Show: The OIAS is the largest auto show in the Pacific Northwest. It showcases vehicles from over 40 manufacturers and includes “Rides and Drives,” new car giveaway, the Great Outdoors, and even motorcycles.
Farwest Show: This is a significant event for the green industry in the West, typically held in August. It attracts growers, retailers, landscape professionals, and suppliers.
Portland House & Outdoor Living Show: Usually held annually in the spring, this show brings together homeowners and home improvement experts, featuring the latest trends in remodeling, building, and outdoor living.
Crafty Wonderland Art + Craft Market: A popular event featuring a wide array of handmade goods from local and regional artisans.
Bricks Cascade: A large public LEGO fan event showcasing creations from builders around the Pacific Northwest and the world.
Rose City Comic Con: A popular comic book and pop culture convention featuring creators, exhibitors, and celebrity guests.
Kumoricon: Kumoricon is an annual three-day conference in Portland that celebrates anime, manga (Japanese comics), and Japanese culture.
What Makes the Oregon Convention Center a Top Venue
Most convention centers look like, well, convention centers. In other words, functional buildings with modern amenities but basically big rectangle boxes. The Oregon Convention Center is known for its distinctive spire towers and curves. The north tower houses the world’s largest Foucault pendulum, called “Principia,” which swings over a gilded halo and an inlaid fantasy solar system on the floor. These towers are not just architectural features but also significant public artworks.
But the OCC is more than just a pretty face. With approximately 1 million sq. feet of space, the OCC is the largest convention center in the Pacific Northwest and boasts a 34,200 sq. ft. ballroom. Annually, it hosts around 400 events and attracts over 500,000 people.
The OCC’s commitment to sustainability is where the facility truly shines.
Sustainability Leader: The OCC is a pioneer in sustainability. It was the first existing convention center in the U.S. to achieve LEED-EB certification (in 2003) and later earned LEED Platinum certification, the highest level from the U.S. Green Building Council, for both operations and maintenance. Only one other convention center in the U.S. shares this distinction.
Solar Powerhouse: The convention center has a large 6,500-panel solar array on its roof, which provides about 25% of the facility’s electricity. This is one of the largest solar arrays on any convention center in the United States. The remaining electricity and gas usage is offset with renewable energy credits.
Rain Garden for Clean Water: The OCC features a 5.5-acre rain garden on its grounds. This garden filters stormwater runoff from the roof before it reaches the Willamette River, helping to reduce pollution and protect local waterways. The center is also Salmon-Safe certified for its watershed stewardship efforts.
Commitment to Waste Diversion: The OCC has a long-term goal of diverting at least 70% of its waste from landfills through extensive recycling, composting, and donation programs. They work with local non-profit organizations to donate leftover food and reusable materials from events.
The Oregon Convention Center is not just a large event space but also a facility with unique architectural features, a strong commitment to sustainability, and a significant role in the Portland community and economy.
Types of Convention Center Events to Expect at the OCC
The OCC hosts a diverse range of local, regional, and national events, meetings, and trade shows. But what does that really mean? The October 2025 OCC calendar, for example, is an ideal snapshot into the types of events, large and small, held at the convention center.
